How I Detail Custom Curtains
Curtain styles have changed many times over my 40-year career.
When I started in the industry as an assistant at Charles Howard Decoration in London, England, I learned the English attention to detail.
The curtains were lined and interlined, a hallmark of custom high-end soft furnishings for superior drape and energy efficiency. The details kept going: main fabric and lining choices, trim and tie-back ideas, heading options, a graceful break on the floor, and rod style or valance. The list goes on, and I enjoyed learning it all.

When I returned to Canada in 1980, the design style was simpler and so were the curtains. Fabrics were chosen for different levels of light control and heat insulation.
For many years, the style favoured unlined curtains that offered varying degrees of privacy, sun protection, and simplicity. Curtains were not the star of the room, especially in the growing condo market with its huge windows.

I now have many clients who love the look and feel of lined and interlined curtains and appreciate all the thoughtful details.
Curtains are an important part of a roomās design and should always fit the project's style.
